    Surprise as Rabbi Berland seeks bail

    In a surprise development today (Thursday, June 23), Rabbi Eliezer Berland, head of the Shuvu Banim Breslov sect who has been on the run from Israeli justice on sex allegations for three years, has applied to the SA High Court for bail pending an application to overturn the extradition ruling issued against him just before Pesach.

    Ties between the South African government and Palestine have been strengthened following a meeting by President Jacob Zuma and his counterpart‚ Mahmoud Abbas. This, according to a statement issued by the Presidency after Zuma hosted Abbas at his official Cape Town residence, Tuynhuys, last week. Abbas is pictured, left, speaking at a UN-sponsored conference in Turkey the day prior to his arrival in SA.

    Mystery arrival of tzadik to 'aid' Berland

    Last week Thursday, after a fraught and sometimes bizarre hearing, “Rabbi-on-the run” Eliezer Berland, wanted for sex crimes in Israel, was denied bail in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. Migdal HaEmek Chief Rabbi HaRav Yitzchok Dovid Grossman left Israel on Sunday night and arrived in South Africa on Monday to try and assist Rabbi Berland in getting bail. According to Israeli news site, Yeshiva World, “Rav Grossman will try to calm the situation between the local community and Rabbi Berland, which some report has contributed to the court refusing him bail.”

    Randburg magistrate denied Rabbi Eliezer Berland (pictured, left, for JR Online by Ilan Ossendryver) bail after his “brazen” escape from Holland while on bail there. His lawyer Harold Knopp presented legal precedents for internationally wanted criminals sticking to their bail conditions, including that of gangster Shai Musli, in an effort to convince the court to grant bail.     Rabbi Eliezer Berland’s attorney, Themba Langa, on Tuesday closed his case at the rabbi’s bail hearing in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court with an impassioned plea that the rabbi be given bail, especially as it is Passover. He said the rabbi was a man of elevated spirituality and probity and “in the normal course of events” would have returned to Israel to deal with the allegations of sexual assault made against him by followers.     Rabbi Eliezer Berland’s bail hearing is scheduled to continue this morning [Tuesday, April 26] in the Randburg Magistrate’s court, on the northwest side of Johannesburg. But, given what took place at the hearing last week, especially on Thursday and Friday, there is no guarantee that the hearing will reach an end.
