    Modern Jewish holiday season upon us

    Since the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, the Knesset has established five public holidays or days of remembrance/celebration. Three of these are coming up shortly: Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day; Yom Hazikaron, Memorial Day for the Fallen; and Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day.     Israel’s ambassador to South Africa, Arthur Lenk (pictured), told the SA Friends of Israel (SAFI) advocacy conference earlier this month that he had hosted Israel’s immediate past President Shimon Peres in February. The 90-year-old career diplomat and politician, Peres, had come to speak to South African Jewry.

    Travel time from TA to J’salem cut to 30 min

    Israel's biggest ever civil project to open in 2018 - cutting travel time by 60% and alleviating traffic on the roads too. Travel time between Tel Aviv’s Haganah station and Jerusalem’s International Convention Centre station, via Ben Gurion International Airport, will be just half an hour, with four trains per hour running each way.

    ISIS: jihadists can deal with Israel later

    The Islamic State (ISIS) said in its weekly newspaper, al-Naba, that it does intend on attacking Israel at a later stage, but has not yet allocated resources to that fight as it does not believe the Palestinian cause is more significant than other issues affecting Muslims. They call on Jihadists to topple Arab nations first before turning their focus on the Holy Land.

    Show off, but Charedi rockers stay in Belgium

    When they boarded a plane heading to Belgium on Monday, world-famous Charedi pop stars Gil and Aryeh Gat were on a mission to bring extra cheer to one of the world’s happiest Jewish events: Purim in Antwerp, a city that is home to home to some 12 000 Charedi Jews. But, while the event had to be cancelled, the brothers from Eilat decided to stay on and provide Belgian Jews solace with a private show.

    Israel only country where more men pray

    Israel is the only country in the world where more men engage in daily prayers than women, according to a new study by the Pew Research Centre. The study, which draws on data from more than 2 500 censuses and surveys taken over the last few years in 192 countries, found that women generally are more religious than men, according to the study released this Tuesday and titled “The Gender Gap in Religion Around the World”.

    Israeli Embassy cuts annual party to help SA

    The Israeli Ambassador is foregoing his annual garden lunch with elite members of the diplomatic corps and senior Jewish leaders this year, to free up funds he plans to use to bring his country's top water and agricultural scientists to South Africa to offer their expertise to both the private and public sectors at exhibitions to be held in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Among important stakeholders and decision makers invited are SA Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane and members of her department.

    Biden blasts Abbas, given up on peace deal

    US Vice-President Joe Biden blasted PA President Mahmoud Abbas' failure to condemn Palestinian acts of terrorism. "No leader has the right to tolerate terrorism," Biden told over 18 000 delegates at the AIPAC 2016 conference. The conference will be addressed by five of the remaining six US presidential candidates, the exception being Bernie Sanders. Biden also said that there was no political will among Israelis or Palestinians to move forward to peace.

    Israelis killed, injured is suspected ISIS bomb

    At least three Israelis and an Iranian were among those who perished in an Istanbul suicide bombing on Saturday. Many more Israelis were wounded and, as is their wont, by Sunday morning Magen David Adom (MDA – Israel’s ‘Red Cross’) and the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) had two planes on the ground, doctors treating their wounded at three different hospitals and were preparing to take home their dead and injured. Pictured are the three coffins being repatriated by the IDF on Sunday.
