South Africa: dark clouds over a Diaspora dream

    Feb 10, 2016 2 Comments
If the Jews do one thing well, it’s to imprint their mark on new lands. And if that imprint describes one pattern, it would be some black punishment for their trouble. As dark night follows bright day, this has been the law of exile.

Bernie Sanders still champions values of his Israeli kibbutz

    Feb 10, 2016 1 Comment
Every morning, Bernie Sanders would wake up at 04:10 to pick apples and pears. Leaving the cabin he shared with a few other American college student volunteers, Sanders would have a quick bite of bread before heading out to the orchard. After 2 1/2 hours’ work, he and the other 20 or so volunteers would sit down for a traditional 30-minute Israeli breakfast of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, butter and hard-boiled eggs.I

Hunt for Berland led to death threats, allegations

    Feb 04, 2016 Go comment!
Rabbi-on-the-run Eliezer Berland dodged an arrest attempt by Interpol and the South African Hawks for the third time last month, despite security forces arriving with a well-armed tactical team. A death threat was made, and subsequently recanted, by the Berlanders against the Chief Rabbi. This is the latest in a series of bizarre statements published by the Shuvu Banim sect in recent weeks. The SAPS and most SA Jewish communal organisations have called on Rabbi Berland to return to Israel to face his criminal charges.

There’s much more to Israel than Middle East conflict

    Feb 03, 2016 Go comment!
For Diaspora Jewry, identifying with Israel has today largely become a matter of showing solidarity in times of trouble and defending it against its multiple detractors. The flipside of this is that Israel’s many extraordinary achievements and the sheer richness and excitement of living in a thriving, multicultural Jewish state, tends to be overshadowed.

'They have the halachic status of a rodef'

These words, purportedly uttered by Rabbi Yitzchak Chakak last week, have such connotations that JR set out to find out more about the little-known rabbinic concept which is - unfortunately - back in the news. It resurfaced as followers of R. Berland declared a "din rodef" against the Chief Rabbi. It may be only the second time the concept has been invoked in recent times, last making the front pages as partial justification for the assassination of Israeli PM Rabin in '95. But now, R Chakak may have recanted, Shuvu Banim have toned it down & influential conservative Rabbi Shlomo Aviner had much to say.

Did mistake lead to unintended death threat

    Jan 31, 2016 Go comment!
It was all a mistake, says spokesman for the Shuvu Banim Breslov sect at their yeshiva which is a stone’s throw from the Kotel in Jerusalem. “Yossi” - members only go by their first names - told Jewish Report online that “it was never once written on the website anything on the matter in the name of Rabbi Berland,” he said. Yossi reiterated that Rav Berland never even knew of the content of his blog or website and that accusing him of making “a death threat to Goldstein is an outright lie and it is a blood libel.” The content on the blog has been changed, he says.
