    His country fired him from his post, but heard what their Jewish Unesco Ambassador Andrés Roemer said. He was released from his duties after protesting his country’s support for a resolution which denied Jewish ties to Temple Mount on Monday, but Mexico changed its vote with an apology to its Jewish community on Tuesday and for the first time since 2010, opposed a proposal by the Palestinian-Arab bloc in Unesco, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

    Unesco bill may not be put to vote Tuesday

    Last Friday, the chairman of Unesco’s executive board tried to put a damper on a controversial Thursday vote that seemed to reject Jewish ties to Jerusalem. “We need more time and dialogue between the members of the board to reach a consensus,” Michael Worbs told the French news agency AFP. This after the massive backlash from Israel (which withdrew from the body) and many US groups. SA voted in favour of the bill. Will the resolution sink before it can swim?

    The long-time confidant of Netanyahu stepped down Thursday as director-general of Israel’s Foreign Ministry and de facto Minister of Foreign Affairs. Netanyahu has held the ministerial post himself since the last election. Gold made what was bilaterally hailed as a highly successful trip to SA in March to visit his counterpart at DIRCO, Ambassador Jerry Matjile, who had extended the invitation.

    It was like chalk and cheese as the Johannesburg’s memorial service for Shimon Peres was a poorly-attended event while Cape Town Jewry came out in droves. The short notice and an evening of big planned events like matric dances, school plays and other community affairs in both cites drew many who would otherwise have attended the service. J-Post refers to Goldstein as “The Good Shabbos Rabbi”. How influential does this make Rabbi Goldstein in the eyes of what is often called the most international of Israeli newspapers? Very. He came in 21st, ahead of the likes of Natan Sharansky (24th) and President Reuven Rivlin (29th).

Israeli police say eight were injured, two critically, as the terrorist opened fire at three sites.
