Winkler says that besides Johannesburg, “I know that my father lived in Cape Town and modern-day Botswana. After he returned to England, he changed his name from Levy to Leigh.”

Winkler writes that her father enjoyed his life in South Africa, “but after he married my mother he did not keep any photos or mementos of his time there. However, after he died I discovered his South African drivers licence in the pocket of one of his jackets. Clearly it meant a lot to him if he had kept it for 66 years. It also contains the only photo that I have of him from this time.

“Does anyone in South Africa remember him? I realise that after the passage of such a long time it is not very likely, but perhaps seeing his photograph will trigger the memory of a relative or friend of someone who knew him.”

Winkler’s e-mail address is winkler@win-tech.co.uk
