Maria Altmann was an elderly Jewish woman living in Los Angeles who, together with her young inexperienced lawyer, Randy Schoenberg, fought the government of Austria for almost a decade to reclaim Klimt’s iconic painting of Maria’s aunt, The Woman in Gold, stolen from her relatives by the Nazis in Vienna just prior to World War II. Ronald Lauder later bought the painting for $135 million, the highest sum ever paid for a painting to that date.
