JGSSA: Blame it on Lionel’s bored, recalcitrant computer

As chairman of the Jewish Genealogical Society of South Africa (formerly Johannesburg Genealogical Society), I wish to record my exception to what was printed in the Jewish Report of January 30, under the headline: “Johannesburg Genealogical Society re-launched”.

  1. The original short article was printed about two years ago.
  2. The renamed/ titled society is now recorded as the “Jewish Genealogical Society of South Africa and not as you have stated!
  3. Because we have regular meetings in 2015 (second year!) your article has caused confusion. Our next meeting is on Sunday February 15.

Kindly refrain from filling holes in editing with proper information! This is nonsense.

Chairman: Jewish Genealogical Society of South Africa

The article we based our short story on, was sent to us shortly before Christmas from Lionel Slier’s computer. We had no reason to doubt its authenticity. We opened it when our offices opened on January 9. If you will remember, Lionel’s computer wreaked havoc with a nearly three-year-old story on the Beyachad library also sent to us during that period. Obviously we treated the story on your society in good faith, not knowing that it had grown a long beard. I hope the confusion has been cleared up. But something that is of concern to me is your last paragraph asking us to “refrain from filling holes”. Would you rather we not give any coverage to your society? – Editor
