CSO community update

Dear community,

Over the past hours we have seen an escalation in the current war, with Hezbollah joining the conflict and an attack on a Saudi oilfield. In addition, we note the terror attack in Austin, Texas, where the shooter wore a shirt bearing the words “Property of Allah” and had a Quran in his vehicle.

There are ongoing calls to “globalise the Intifada”, a campaign that is very active in South Africa. It is undoubtedly a call to violence against Jews.

History demonstrates that wars and terror incidents in other countries often motivate individuals with harmful intent. We strongly encourage community members to be vigilant and attentive over the coming days, and specifically around Purim celebrations.

We urge you to follow basic security practices:

  • Be aware of your surroundings, particularly in and around communal spaces, places of worship, and Purim events. If you do not recognise someone or see something out of place, contact the CSO emergency number immediately.
  • Report anything suspicious. If you see something unusual or out of place, contact the CSO emergency number immediately.
  • Create your own emergency evacuation plan and make your family aware.
  • Designate safe zones including while in public spaces.
  • Follow the guidance of trained security personnel.
  • When choosing a Purim costume, bear in mind the heightened security situation. Ensure that your costume is sensible and does not create anxiety for other community members or cause security personnel to be concerned. Ensure that your face is visible to security personnel.
  • Do not congregate in public spaces.

This is not a time for fear, but for calm and focused vigilance. Security is a communal collaborative effort.

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to our collective safety.
