The season opening commenced with a breakfast followed by speeches and a game of bowls. Bobby who had his birthday some days before the season opening – on October 12 – was supposed to go paragliding in tandem from Lion’s Head to the Glen Country Club. Unfortunately, due to the lack of wind, this was not possible. So everyone enjoyed the breakfast after which, Bowls Chairman Geoff Chait and Bobby made short speeches.

On the patio, members were treated to sparkling wine and birthday cake, while watching the Cape Minstrels perform and sing some of their traditional songs, including singing “Happy Birthday” to Bobby in true minstrel style.

Then it was off to the bowling green for a flag-raising ceremony followed by a “Spider” before playing the first game of the season. The “Spider” is a fun charity event with all the bowlers putting money in a hat and the collection is donated to charity.

The actual “Spider” is the placing of the kitty in the centre of the green and then all the bowlers deliver their wood simultaneously to see who finishes nearest to the jack.
