JNF SA mission fosters understanding of Israel

The JNF South Africa (JNF SA’s) recent mission to Israel in collaboration with Birthright was a profound experience that fostered deep connections, demonstrated resilience, and emphasised solidarity. Participants engaged in meaningful activities that highlighted the importance of communal support, environmental stewardship, and understanding the challenges faced by Israel.

Throughout the mission, volunteers contributed to community development projects such as visiting the Siyabonga Gardens and neighbourhood revitalisation efforts, reinforcing the value of tangible aid and ongoing commitment. The planting of trees in the Lavie Forest symbolised not only environmental renewal, but personal investment and lasting bonds with Israel.

Participants gained insight into Israel’s agricultural struggles, learning firsthand about the resilience required to sustain farming communities amid labour shortages and ongoing geopolitical issues post 7 October 2023. This fostered an appreciation for the perseverance of Israeli farmers and the significance of food security.

The trip also offered reflective moments, especially during Shabbat in Jerusalem, where participants connected spiritually and emotionally. Encounters with communities impacted by conflict, such as those in Kfar Azar and Shuva Junction, underscored the resilience and unwavering spirit of those rebuilding their lives amid adversity.

Cultural and emotional activities, including singing, prayer, and storytelling, deepened participants’ understanding of the Israeli experience of the suffering post the 7 October attack and the ongoing testament to hope and renewal. The journey reinforced the importance of global solidarity and personal involvement in supporting Israel’s future.

Overall, the mission wasn’t just about witnessing challenges but actively contributing to the resilience and hope of the Israeli people. Participants left with a renewed sense of purpose; a strengthened connection to Israel; and a commitment to stand in solidarity, embodying the values of unity, resilience, and hope.
