JNF’s Tu B’Shvat ceremonies strengthen communal roots
The Jewish National Fund (JNF’s) Tu B’Shvat festivities included a Family Market Day on Sunday, 1 February, where community members of all ages could celebrate together.
The JNF also collaborated with PJ Library to offer school children the opportunity to explore the chag through reading and storytelling. It added an educational layer to the celebrations, helping children connect to the themes of Tu B’Shvat in an accessible and engaging way. Seed collections were organised in honour of the chag, accompanied by a special video explaining the significance of Tu B’Shvat for young audiences.
And, as befits the birthday of the trees, schools marked Tu B’Shvat itself with a “happy birthday” celebration, complete with cake, adding a fun and a symbolic touch to the day.
The Tu B’Shvat Market Day featured a variety of vendors, engaging activities, and delicious food stalls. There was something for everyone. More than just a market, the event celebrated the birthday of the trees and the strength of the community itself.
Together, these initiatives formed a vibrant and inclusive Tu B’Shvat programme reflecting the values at the heart of JNF, namely bringing people together; celebrating our chaggim; and strengthening the enduring connection between Israel and South Africa.
