This first message issued by Ann Harris, vice-president of the AJC to “Travelling Rabbi” Moshe Silberhaft, who is the spiritual leader and CEO of the AJC (as well as being the spiritual leader of the SA Country Communities.

Harris Ann HOMERabbi Silberhaft took it from there – informing the vast array of parties involved in the 13 member-countries of the AJC as well as their major donors, most notably the  US-based World Jewish Council.

Ann Harris has herself worked tirelessly for, and devoted herself to, African Jewry since the passing of her late husband, Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris.

Harris’ sad message continued…

I am sorry to begin a new week with sad news for us all.

Our highly respected president, Mervyn Smith, passed away during Shabbat after several months’ severe illness.

His death is a loss not only to his family, but to our whole community since he was such a driving force in so many communal organisations.

In particular, the African Jewish Congress has suffered a serious blow. Mervyn’s passion and commitment for the communities of Southern Africa was beyond the call of duty and kept our interests firmly on the agenda of the World Jewish Congress. We will all miss his wisdom and leadership.

Rabbi Silberhaft and I will make sure the condolence wishes of the members of the AJC will be conveyed to Mervyn’s family.

May we all be blessed to be in touch with and support one another with happier news.

A lawyer by profession, Mervyn Smith served in various roles on the SA Jewish Board of Deputies and played a significant role in the struggle through his many anti-Apartheid activities.
