As white South African Jews our situation is messy. On one hand we are proud and happy (well, most of the enlightened ones are) to be living in a hard won democratic South Africa and are happy that the Blacks, original owners of this land, finally won their freedom from oppression. As white South Africans, we ought never to forget that we are guests in this country and the original owners of this land have graciously allowed us to stay. As Jews we are hurting that our government have taken sides against Israel, even while we recognize that this action is about unshed tears from the years of apartheid. And while we are hurting and fearful about this, we ought never to forget the injustices that the Black people endured and are still enduring as a result of the apartheid and its ensuing fallout. It is easy to judge, criticize, condemn, point fingers when government don’t hit the ground running and it’s easy to forget the monumental task they were faced with when taking office. They inherited an infrastructure that was essentially built to service a small minority of the population but we rant and rave like spoiled brats when that infrastructure breaks down and there are unemployment challenges, etc. etc. and we so easily forget that this government is fighting a battle not one of us could imagine or rise up to. We should be encouraging them, supporting them, be their biggest cheerleaders, and helping them, not criticizing them. And, yes, they’re taking sides, as are many in the world, against Israel, but Israel can hold its own. We, as white Jewish South Africans need to choose our battles wisely. We need to adopt a broader perspective and show solidarity with our government, especially now in these uncertain times. And we should never, not one of us, be able to look at a Black person without remembering how oppressed they were and the internal battles and PTSD they’re now dealing with, and without remembering that though they may smile and greet us, because diplomacy is in their DNA, the emotional scars they carry. And it is within this context that we should frame the question, is Donald is good for the Jews. As Chaim says, perhaps it is the wrong question to be asking.
