The year 2016 is “particularly poignant,” writes Roro (her social and blogging name), as rising anti-Semitism around the world less than a century after the Holocaust “which has resulted in violence and sometimes death is a stark reminder about the perils of not learning from history.”

Fittingly, the modern-day Israeli holidays, the YomYom season, begins with Yom Hashoah, Holocaust martyrs and heroes memorial day, when Israelis will pause for a minute as the memorial sirens “pierce our consciousness,” she adds.

Cars and buses come to a stop, everyone gets out and Jews around the world, and everyone in Israel, “will bow our heads in silent memoriam,” writes Rolene.

“The tears flow freely and our hearts collectively break. But then the siren stops and we open our eyes and look at the country we have built. Built on miracles. Built on innovation. Built on blood, sweat and tears.”
