End of an era as iconic Yiddish Folk closes its doors

The decision to close Yiddish Folk has not been an easy one, the school said in a media release. Over the years, the much-loved Yiddish Folk has educated thousands of Jewish children in Johannesburg. Generations have been nurtured and loved, have learnt, played and formed life-long friendships there.

Teachers, staff, facilities and education have changed, but one thing will always remain the same: the impact and fond memories that Yiddish Folk has created.

Rabbi Craig Kacev, director of the SA Board of Jewish Education, explains: “Yiddish Folk has created a nurturing environment, an excellent academic grounding and wonderful memories for so many King David students over the years.  The SABJE considered many factors when taking the decision to close the school, including current student numbers and demographics, and together with other variables, there was a clear indication that there should be a consolidation of resources at a pre-school level.”

There will be a farewell ceremony on Wednesday November 23, at 17:00 at the school. The SABJE invites all parents who have had an involvement with Yiddish Folk over the years, to pay tribute to the school and to come and enjoy a trip down memory lane. Please contact yiddfolk@sabje.co.za for more information.
