Government shouldn’t have ‘tunnel vision’ on Hamas

CRAIG SACKS

We all know about the recent disastrous collapse of the scaffolding for the new Grayston pedestrian bridge, linking Alexandra township to Sandton. Over 10 000 people walk along Grayston Drive every day and the benefit of the bridge in terms of improving pedestrian mobility and safety, is clear.

The collapse of the bridge cost the lives of two motorists, injured more than 20 others and squandered who knows how many millions of rands.

Hamas must have some of the best Ivy League graduate civil and structural engineers as well as some of the best geologists in the world. I would have hoped that the South African government would have enlisted the help of Hamas in connecting Alexandra and Sandton.

With Hamas’ involvement, there would be no need for a multi-million rand bridge; we could tunnel right underneath the highway. The project would probably be completed within three weeks and you wouldn’t even know that they were there! Alas, some people only care about politics and until our government takes a more pragmatic stance, this project may remain dead and buried.
