BDS turns statement of ‘bored’ academics around

Published

“Signatories include professors from universities across the country, as well as academics from South African research institutes and think tanks. Their declaration follows a similar commitment by 600 academics in the UK which was issued in October,” says the South African arm of the US-based non-governmental organisation Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (against Israel), BDS-SA.

“That’s par for the course,” said one community leader who asked not to be named.“These academic types get bored in their holidays!”

BDS Bug OutWhat he meant by that, he said, was that the 600 UK academics issued their statement at the end of their long summer holidays, and the South Africans “copied and re-issued it at the beginning of our (southern hemisphere) summer holidays”. He told Jewish Report Online that this is an annual affair. “BDS-SA always has to get into the act and hijack it as they have the mailing list.”

While the 204 SA academics, led by Professors Robert van Niekerk, Salim Vally and Steven Friedman, said they would refrain from supporting Israeli institutions in their statement, they did say they would continue “to work with our Israeli colleagues in their individual capacities” and they never spoke of an academic boycott.

Here’s the academics’ statement, with signatories listed below:

A commitment by SA scholars to the rights of Palestinians

We South African scholars, noting the initiative by more than 600 of our academic colleagues in the United Kingdom in solidarity with Palestinians under occupation similarly endorse the commitment on the rights of Palestinians as published in the Guardian newspaper on October 27, 2015. We also note that on November 4, more than 120 academics based in Ireland also endorsed this commitment.

As scholars associated with South African universities, we are also deeply disturbed by Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land, the intolerable human rights violations that it inflicts on all sections of the Palestinian people, and its apparent determination to resist any feasible settlement.

Responding to the appeal from Palestinian civil society,
we therefore also declare that we will not:

  • accept invitations to visit Israeli academic institutions;
  • act as referees in any of their processes;
  • participate in conferences funded, organised or sponsored by them, or otherwise cooperate with them.

We will, however, continue to work with our Israeli colleagues in their individual capacities and consistent with a shared commitment of our Israeli colleagues to the position we have outlined in this statement.

We will maintain this position until the State of Israel complies with international law, and respects universal principles of human rights.

    ‘Thank goodness we have such moral academics standing on the parapet of discrimination against Israel.It would be gratifying to see their names on a list condemning atrocities committed in certain Middle East countries.

    Perhaps this list could be compiled during the winter vacation,before their bored minds freeze completely.

    ‘SA is fast becoming a country of has beens.

    How many of these academics are known internationally?

    If the Republicans get in at elections, BDS and boycotts of Israel are history’

    ‘Note: 13 Jews among the signatories. Through out history there have been such Jews; but despite their efforts the Jewish People has survived and is still very much alive and well in a Jewish state.’
