Dr Trevor Hurwitz, now based in Vancouver, is among the distinguished recipients of this year’s Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

Born and raised in Pretoria, a former Pretoria Boys High School pupil, and having studied medicine at Pretoria University, Hurwitz has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his pioneering contributions to neuropsychiatry.

Widely regarded as the founder of neuropsychiatry in British Columbia, he serves as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia, where he established the province’s first neuropsychiatric programmes. His work has significantly advanced the diagnosis and treatment of complex brain disorders and has benefited countless patients over several decades.

Speaking to the Pretoria Jewish Chronicle, Hurwitz said, “Receiving the Order of Canada is an immense honour and a source of great pride. At the same time, it fills me with a profound sense of gratitude, knowing that such recognition could only have come through the extraordinary support and confidence of the community with whom I have had the privilege of working over many years.”

Established in 1967, the Order of Canada recognises individuals from all sectors of society who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to the Canadian nation. The 2026 appointments were announced by Governor General Louise Arbour on 26 June. Notably, five members of Canada’s Jewish community are among this year’s honourees.

Hurwitz’s appointment is a source of pride not only for Canada but also for the Pretoria Jewish community, which celebrates the achievements of one of its own on the international stage.
