Business Icon Award honours leaders of commerce
For generations, Jewish men and women have helped shape South Africa’s economic landscape. From pioneering industrialists like Sammy Marks, whose entrepreneurial vision helped lay the foundations of modern industry in the country, to the founders and leaders of some of South Africa’s best-known companies, members of the Jewish community have made a lasting contribution to commerce, innovation, and economic growth.
The Business Icon Award at the Investec Jewish Achiever Awards recognises the most seasoned and accomplished business leaders whose vision, leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and influence have left an indelible mark on the commercial landscape.
The calibre of past recipients reflects the prestige of the honour. Business stalwart and founder of Dion Stores Dion Friedland received the award in 2024 in recognition of his lifetime contribution to South African retail and entrepreneurship. In 2025, the accolade went to JD Group founder David Sussman, whose pioneering work helped transform the country’s furniture retail industry. Other recipients include Cape Union Mart chairperson Philip Krawitz, recognised for building one of South Africa’s leading family-owned retail businesses, and Dis-Chem founders Ivan and Lynette Saltzman, whose vision grew a single pharmacy into one of the country’s largest healthcare retail groups.
Collectively, these recipients represent more than commercial success. They are business leaders whose achievements have stood the test of time, whose influence extends beyond their own companies, and whose careers have helped shape South African business while inspiring future generations of entrepreneurs.
Nominations are now open for the 2026 Investec Jewish Achiever Awards Business Icon Award. And you can help continue its tradition of recognising remarkable business figures. Readers are encouraged to nominate people who have built enduring businesses, demonstrated visionary leadership, and made a lasting contribution to both the economy and the broader community.
As the Investec Jewish Achiever Awards once again celebrates excellence within the South African Jewish community, the Business Icon Award remains one of its highest honours, recognising those whose legacy is woven into the fabric of South African business.
