Echoes of the soul: A shofar meditation

Published

on

There is so much noise we create within ourselves – our worries, expectations, fears, and ideas about how life needs to be.

Rosh Hashanah invites us to take the crown off our own heads and coronate the true King. To transform the ra’ash, the noise, of the year into Rosh Hashanah, the head of the year. To quiet ourselves enough to hear something deeper.

The shofar wakes us from our unconscious patterns and breaks through the boundaries of our constricted thinking. Its sounds can become a journey of healing for the soul.

The first sound is tekiah, one long, clear, unbroken note. It represents clarity, tranquillity, and surrender. Take a slow breath in and out. Imagine the tekiah clearing away the noise of the year – the worry, fear, and need to control everything. Allow yourself to surrender. You don’t need to know how everything will unfold.

Say quietly, “Hashem, I place my life in Your hands. Wherever life takes me, help me discover You there.” Feel the inner silence that comes when you no longer need to control everything.

Then comes shevarim, three broken sounds. Shever means broken.

The shofar begins to cry. There are parts of ourselves that have become distant during the year. Moments when we lost touch with who we really are, with others, or with Hashem. The broken sound gives us permission to feel that distance. Take another breath. Allow yourself to feel whatever needs to be felt – disappointment, pain, longing, regret. Not with judgement, but with tenderness. If tears come, let them come. Ask Hashem simply, “Bring me home. Help me become close again.”

Then comes teruah, short, urgent sounds, like an alarm calling us to move. Emotion must become action. Ask yourself: What is one thing I want to change this year? Perhaps greater patience. More kindness. More presence. Deeper prayer. More Torah. A more conscious Shabbos. More time listening to your soul. Don’t choose 10 things. Choose one. Let the teruah awaken within you the courage to begin.

Finally comes tekiah gedolah, one great, expansive, unbroken sound. We return to wholeness. Breathe deeply. Release the remaining noise. Feel Hashem within you and around you. Feel yourself held within something infinitely greater than yourself. You began with noise. You passed through surrender, brokenness, and awakening. And now, for a moment, there is simply presence.

May the sound of the shofar awaken within us a year of clarity, healing, courage, and connection. May Hashem bless us with a sweet new year, and may we experience the ultimate tekiah gedolah – the sound of freedom, redemption, and peace.
