A sacred opportunity for renewal

As the sun sets on the past year and we step into Rosh Hashanah, we are reminded of the beauty of renewal, a chance to begin again with hope, purpose, and gratitude. This sacred time in our calendar invites us not only to reflect on where we have been, but to envision how we can contribute meaningfully to the year ahead.

Rosh Hashanah is more than the marking of time. It’s a celebration of life, a recognition of our ability to change, and a call to strengthen our bonds of compassion and community. In every greeting of “Shanah Tovah”, we extend goodwill and blessing, not only in words but also in action.

At the Women’s International Zionist Organisation (WIZO), we are deeply inspired by the values of kindness, responsibility, and collective care. Just as a single candle can light many others without diminishing its own flame, so too can each of us bring light into the lives of others. Through acts of generosity, encouragement, and presence, we can uplift those around us and become vessels of blessing.

We are part of something bigger and more meaningful. Each project we support in Israel, each woman and child uplifted, is part of our collective mission. And in this new year, we pray that our sisterhood grows in strength, purpose, and numbers.

As we gather around our holiday tables, our hearts remain with the people of Israel, especially the hostages still waiting to be returned home. We hold close the children who long for the warmth of family, particularly those in foster homes who deserve to feel safe, cherished, and part of a community. May this Rosh Hashanah bring them, too, the blessing of belonging and the promise of a sweet new beginning.

This year, may we find renewal not only within ourselves but in the way we touch the lives of others. May our homes be filled with peace, our communities with unity, and our world with justice and compassion.

On behalf of WIZO South Africa, I wish you and your loved ones a sweet, healthy, and fulfilling New Year. May we each embrace the opportunity to be a source of blessing, today and every day.

Shanah Tovah U’metukah.
