The art of being Jewish at Limmud
In Jewish life, learning is sacred, but it has never been confined to study halls or books alone. From the lyrical poetry of Psalms, to the intricate designs of synagogue mosaics, from the melodies of Yiddish folk songs, to the bold strokes of a Chagall painting, arts and culture are a living, breathing expression of who we are and how we acquire Jewish knowledge and wisdom.
At Limmud, arts and culture take centre stage and offer a powerful way to explore our Jewish identity, history, and spirituality. From thought-provoking talks and hands-on workshops, to storytelling, music, dance, writing, and theatre, Limmud offers a rich tapestry of experience that makes Limmud a vibrant canvas of Jewish, cultural life.
This year’s conference is bursting with creative energy. These are just some of standout presenters at Limmud this year:
- Aviva Dautch is a poet, scholar, and cultural curator whose work bridges Jewish heritage and contemporary creativity. As executive director of Jewish Renaissance, the United Kingdom’s leading Jewish arts magazine, she champions diverse voices and vibrant storytelling. With a PhD in contemporary poetics and a passion for Jewish literature, her sessions promise to be as intellectually rich as they are emotionally resonant.
- Leon Fenster is a London-based artist and architect whose intricate, whimsical illustrations tell layered stories of Jewish life, memory, and place. His sessions invite participants to see the world – and their heritage – through a more imaginative, interconnected lens.
- Anthony Russell is a classically trained opera singer who found his artistic home in Yiddish folk music. His performances and talks explore the intersections of black and Jewish identity, tradition, and innovation, with a voice that’s as soulful as it is scholarly. Russell won Der Yidersher Idol in 2017.
- Jordy Sank and Gabriella Blumberg are award-winning South African filmmakers known for telling powerful human stories that resonate across cultures. Together, they craft films that are socially impactful, and deeply rooted in Jewish memory and identity. Their acclaimed documentary I Am Here, a moving portrait of Holocaust survivor Ella Blumenthal, won multiple South African Film and Television Awards and gained international recognition. At Limmud, they’ll share their creative journey and the stories that continue to shape their work.
