Women’s organisation WIZO SA has handed four state-of-the-art wheelchairs imported from Israel to the Hope Home in Johannesburg.

The brightly coloured wheelchairs, designed specifically for young people, were donated through WIZO SA’s outreach programme Wheelchairs of Hope, with money from fundraising activities and generous private donors.

The Hope Home in Westcliff, Johannesburg, a century-old institution, provides residential care and schooling for disabled youngsters.

WIZO SA vice-president Helen Maisels Trisk, and WIZO Johannesburg vice-chairperson Wendy Roth handed over the wheelchairs at a ceremony at the home last week. They found the spirit and optimism of the disabled youngsters and their therapists and teachers overwhelming.

WIZO, the Women’s International Zionist Organization, is a nonpartisan global women’s movement headquartered in Israel that champions feminist and Zionist causes and lobbies for the rights of women.

WIZO SA is one of the oldest of its 38 federations worldwide, dating back 105 years. Among WIZO’s many beneficiaries in Israel are nursery schools, training colleges, foster homes, trauma counselling centres, and shelters for abused women.
