Cautious optimism; courageous diplomacy

“The South African Jewish Board of Deputies [SAJBD] joins Jewish communities worldwide in prayer for the safe return of the hostages and the peace deal,” said SAJBD National Director Wendy Kahn.

“The SAJBD welcomes the newly brokered peace deal, led by the United States and Arab nations, to release Israeli hostages and put an end to this prolonged war. We especially applaud the courageous world leaders who have chosen the path of dialogue, negotiation, and diplomacy over rhetoric and hate. Their principled leadership stands in stark contrast to those who have exploited this tragedy for political posturing rather than promoting genuine peace.

“Since the horrific terror attacks of 7 October 2023, the SAJBD has remained unwavering in its advocacy for a sustainable peace; the immediate release of the hostages; and a permanent ceasefire that ensures Israel’s security.

“As the release of our 48 brothers and sisters approaches, we join Jewish communities worldwide in prayer for their safe return; for the healing of all wounded in body and spirit; and for the protection of innocents on all sides. We also note the significance and importance of ensuring a proper Jewish burial for those who tragically didn’t survive, honouring their memory with dignity and respect.

“It’s a profound disappointment that the South African government, despite its ties to Hamas, adopted a one-sided and performative stance from the conflict’s outset, choosing meaningless virtue signalling exercises and failing to leverage its position to contribute meaningfully to hostage negotiations, de-escalation, or the pursuit of a peace that could have saved countless lives. How good it is that you have come home!”
