UJW Johannesburg marks another year of filling hearts and plates

Union of Jewish Women (UJW) president Sue Jacobson commended the Johannesburg branch on its commitment to education, community partnerships, and innovation, at the 94th annual general meeting (AGM) on Thursday, 30 July. 

She praised its volunteers for ensuring the UJW remains relevant, compassionate, and responsive to the needs of communities. 

Lynne Levin received a Certificate of Appreciation for her long-time contribution, from her years as a UJW secretary to founding the thriving Monday knitting group and producing the much-loved monthly gardening newsletter. Her passion, talent, and generosity continue to inspire, said the organisation. 

Johannesburg chairperson Ingrid Koor reflected on another year of dedicated service, highlighting the UJW’s mission to “fill hearts, plates, and dreams” through programmes that support and empower people of all ages. 

Earlier this year, it relaunched its Bobba-Zaida Trip in memory of the late Pam and Norman Lowenthal. From the many applications received, David and Dilyce Abelman were chosen to visit their family in Australia whom they have not seen for more than three years. They also received brand new luggage. And an anonymous donor stepped forward to send a second bobba, Vanessa Chesno, to visit her daughter in Canada after an absence of too many years. 

Koor recognised the contributions of the UJW Johannesburg executive committee, staff, and volunteers whose commitment drives the many long-term projects for both the Jewish community and outreach. 

She also celebrated the launch of the younger Dor l’Dor branch, growing collaborations with other organisations, and the importance of interfaith and community engagement. 

Koor thanked everyone who contributes to the organisation’s success and called on members to continue supporting its work through volunteering, fundraising, and donations. 

The AGM was well attended by past presidents, other Jewish organisations, volunteers, and donors. 

On behalf of the International Council of Jewish Women (ICJW), president Debbie Wasserman congratulated the UJW SA on its 94th anniversary, recognising nearly a century of dedicated service, leadership, and commitment to empowering women, advancing human rights, and strengthening communities. She reaffirmed ICJW’s pride in its longstanding partnership with UJW SA and wished it continued success. 

Speakers at the AGM, Rob Katz and Khanyi Mlambo, discussed “Ubuntu in motion”, highlighting the incredible work they do through the Shoshana Foundation for both Jewish and other single mothers.
