ANC leads protest at Houghton Golf Club over Palestinian flag
The African National Congress (ANC) and anti-Israel activists led a protest outside Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg on Friday morning, 24 April, following what the club has described as a misrepresentation of events involving a guest who refused to comply with its policies.
The incident in question took place on 17 April, when Louis Seeco arrived at the club with a large Palestinian flag draped on his car. According to the club, he was politely informed that flags were not permitted on the premises, in line with longstanding rules governing conduct on private property. When Seeco contested this and continued to debate the matter, he was asked to leave.
Seeco then shared a version of events on social media that quickly gained traction, claiming he had been banned from the club and was entitled to express his views on Israel and Gaza, in line with the stand taken by the South African government.
At Friday’s protest, at most 50 demonstrators amassed outside the club. Protesters reportedly removed the club’s flag from private property and replaced it with a Palestinian flag. Critics have described the reported action as intimidation on private property.
The club has emphasised that the matter was never about suppressing political views, but about enforcing a neutral environment for all patrons.
“Houghton Golf Club accepts that Mr Seeco felt that his views were not respected. The Club recognises that individuals may hold differing viewpoints and opinions and respects all individuals’ rights to hold and express such views,” it said in a statement.
“It was certainly not the Club’s intention to dismiss or diminish these, and the matter was addressed solely in the context of applying Club policy consistently and with consideration for all who access the Club.”
Central to the dispute is the club’s longstanding policy prohibiting overt political, religious, or cultural displays on its premises, a rule it says is applied equally to all individuals, regardless of their views.
“Houghton Golf Club is proudly diverse and inclusive and seeks to maintain a neutral and welcoming environment for all. Overt displays of symbols, banners, or materials of a political, religious, or cultural nature are not permitted on Club property, as such displays can provoke reaction and detract from the calm and neutral setting the Club strives to uphold. This approach is applied uniformly and without reference to any particular group or viewpoint,” it said in a statement.
The club further underscored that it does not take positions on political or ideological matters.
“Houghton Golf Club does not align itself with, or take positions on, political, religious, or cultural matters, and remains focused on sport, fellowship, and mutual respect.”
The tensions highlighted the rapid escalation that can follow viral social media claims, particularly when amplified by political actors. The presence of ANC members at the protest raised questions about the politicisation of what the club maintains is a straightforward matter of enforcing private property rules.
Supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters had also demonstrated at the club earlier in the week.
By Friday lunchtime, the protesters had dispersed.

It’s a waste of time engaging them. The have their position with respect to Jews and nothing will change it.

The cANCer shows so much resistance barely 50 people arrived , I counted just under 50 but I was early under these weather conditions I rather went home for a hot cup of coffee . Between the cANCer and the eff it appears they would not be able to arrange “a piss up in a brewery” .

It is quite shocking how people can use social media to spread lies and half-truths.This doesn’t seem to be a mistake – more like another carefully planned media attack on Israel and the Jewish people. It is also upsetting to Christians, who support the Jewish people.

Intimidation, intimidation, intimidation – any excuse to exercise it will be acceptable, with, of course, organised repercussions to reinforce the intimidation and publicity! No slur on the golf club, those guys look for opportunities to intimidate and get media coverage to promote their questionable cause. Decency to abide by the rules for the good of all is excepted. To the Jewish community, stand firm, trust in the Lord, for the joy of the Lord is your strength! Neh. 8:10.
