Israel’s resolve gives us strength

Published

Two years have passed since the horrors of 7 October 2023, a day that scarred the Jewish people and the world forever.

On that dark day, innocent lives were brutally taken; families were torn apart; and a profound wound was inflicted on our collective soul. Today, as we commemorate this painful anniversary, we remember every victim, every family shattered, and every community still grappling with the devastation. Their memory strengthens our resolve never to forget and never to remain silent in the face of such cruelty.

And yet, even as we look back, our hearts remain burdened by the present. Two years later, 48 innocent hostages are still held captive in Gaza. Their absence is an open wound. A daily reminder that justice remains incomplete. These men, women, and children have been denied their freedom, their dignity, and the embrace of their loved ones for far too long. We stand with their families, who live every moment in anguish, and we demand with unwavering conviction that the world do more to bring them home.

At the same time, we draw strength and inspiration from Israel itself. A nation that has faced relentless threats yet continues to demonstrate extraordinary resilience, courage, and unity. In the face of terror, Israel’s people have shown the world what it means to stand tall, to rebuild, and to live with purpose. Israel’s strength is not only in its defence, but in its spirit – the way its people choose life, community, and hope, even in the shadow of tragedy.

As the South African Zionist Federation, we reaffirm our solidarity with Israel and our global Jewish family. We will continue to raise our voices, to educate, advocate, and remind our broader society that this isn’t a political question, it’s a moral one. No cause, no ideology, no grievance can ever justify the kidnapping and torment of innocents. To stand idly by in the face of such injustice is to allow humanity itself to be diminished.

And now, as new signs of a possible breakthrough emerge, we dare to hope. Hope that the remaining hostages will soon return to the arms of their families. Hope that Israel, steadfast and resolute, may finally see a horizon of stability, healing, and lasting peace.

On this solemn day, we draw strength from our faith, from our community, and from the unbreakable spirit of the Jewish people. We pray for the souls of those we lost; for the strength of those who survive; and above all, for the safe return of every hostage. May their release come speedily, may their families be reunited, and may we, together, see a future of justice, healing, and peace.
