Amber Cummins, pictured, national director of JNF-SA, is asking communities to consider small river clean-ups during the month and registering their efforts on the DWS website Click here TO PLEDGE SUPPORT and download the PDF of the CLEAR RIVERS PROJECT BOOKLET here.

“Our natural resources need our care and consideration,” Amber told Jewish Report. “I would love our community to be seen to be very co-operative and helpful in this regard.”

JNFKDLThe Department of Water and Sanitation is attempting, in light of the current drought, to create awareness through all manner of community groups, the importance of careful water use, and keeping water supplies clean.

As the month of July is Mandela month and a time when community volunteerism is highlighted, they are appealing to communities to pledge support for their clean water initiatives and to arrange river clean-ups and water education awareness.

“The Department of Water and Sanitation will be embarking on a month-long ‘National Clear Rivers Campaign’ in July with the main clean up taking place on July 18. The objective of the ‘Clear Rivers Campaign’ is to raise awareness through collaborative effort with business and communities on the protection and conservation of fresh water ecosystem as well as creating awareness on the importance of voluntarism.”

The departments call all South Africans to pledge support to the campaign through the following initiatives: use of water efficiently; create awareness with staff and stakeholders on protection of water resources, etc.

“We further invite your organisation to identity rivers you can clean during Mandela Month as well as to sponsor protective gear or mini sass kits for schools.”

JNF is asking the Jewish community to pledge their support by signing up and making a pledge. This would show SA Jewry’s commitment, says Amber, especially in the wake of the Israeli Embassy’s highly successful SA-Israel-Water Week last month.
