Last flight into Israel

As I stared out the window of the Ethiopian Airlines flight into Tel Aviv, I was praying that a missile wouldn’t be fired at Israel by the Houthis.

We landed at 01:30, and two hours later, Tel Aviv – including myself – was sent into bomb shelters. It reminded me of the time I photographed the Gulf War, when at 03:00, Iraq fired scud missiles into Israel.

Within seconds this time around, mothers carried their babies and children into the bomb shelter of the building.

No-one was in the mood to talk, only wanting to get their children and themselves back into bed.

The streets are now quiet, as the Home Front Command has asked everyone to stay near a bomb shelter.

But typically, an Israeli answer to the incoming drones and missiles from Iran is to go shopping for Shabbat and to start preparations.

There’s a strong feeling of confidence in the Israel Defense Forces, Israel Air Force, and the country’s missile-defence systems, that we will be okay.

But at the back of your mind, you wonder when the next air-raid siren will be sounded. Hopefully not again at 03:00.
