Engagement and support needed over 7 October
As we mark the second anniversary of the tragic events of 7 October 2023, the South African Union for Progressive Judaism pauses to remember and honour the hostages, victims, and their loved ones. These memories remind us of the profound human cost of violence, and of the importance of standing together as a community in mourning, resilience, and solidarity.
In these times, we are reminded of the challenge – and necessity – of holding space for diverse perspectives within our community. Balancing dialogue, care, and understanding is never simple. Yet through this careful, sometimes difficult, engagement, we strengthen the bonds that sustain our communal life.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the organisations and institutions in South Africa that work tirelessly to keep our community safe. Your dedication enables us to gather, remember, and continue to build a vibrant and secure Jewish life here.
On this solemn day, we honour all those affected by 7 October. We recommit ourselves to remembrance, to supporting one another, and to ensuring that the lessons of these events remain part of our collective consciousness.
